Nova International, which produces Britain's Great Run series of road races, has tapped Andy Caine to be their elite race manager following the departure of Matt Turnbull. Caine, a Scotsman, will recruit all professional athletes for events like the BUPA Great North Run, BUPA Great Manchester 10-K, and BUPA Great Capital Run.
"It really is a dream job as far as any career goes in my opinion," Caine wrote in an e-mail message. "It will also be a tough one. I've got some big boots to fill, but I'd like to think my past 12 years competing and my time at Nike will give me the skills required to make a big impact."
The 30 year-old Caine has a degree from Loughborough University, and spent four and one-half years at Nike U.K., working his way up to national account manager for footwear. As an athlete, he represented Britain at the junior, U23 and senior levels, making his last national team appearance at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 2004. He competed for the Tynedale AC.
The Great Run series has managed to tie together great elite competition with a festive running experience for the masses, and Caine feels that he will fit right in. "I'm an entertainer at the end of the day," he wrote. "I need to keep everyone happy, the crowds, the TV audiences and of course the sponsors (and let's not forget the athletes and agents)."
