PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Registration for the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon opened at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 3. Now in its second year, the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon is a premier women's triathlon that will take place in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park on Sunday, August 3, 2008. The race includes a .8K (.5 mile) swim, 25K (15.5 mile) bike and a 5K (3.1 mile) run, and attracted 905 registrants in its first year, including professional triathlete Margaret Shapiro, who won the inaugural race. The SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon is from the organizers of the highly acclaimed Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon in Fairmount Park
To create a premier race experience especially for female athletes, the organizers of the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon worked with an advisory group of women. This group included everyone from those who have never done a triathlon before to seasoned professional triathletes. "Our advisory group provided us with a wealth of great ideas which we incorporated into the event, making it highly successful in its first year", said Race Director Barb McKeever. "We've added some additional benefits in 2008 which will make year two even better." New features include:
- Prize Money - $4,999 in prize money will be awarded, with $3,500 allocated to professionals, and $1,499 for amateurs. There are very few all-women's triathlons that offer prize money.
- A Buddy Wave - Women who want to complete the race with a friend or family member who is in a different age group will now be able to participate in the Buddy Wave. The Buddy Wave will be the last wave, and participants in this wave will not be eligible for age-group awards.
The event will once again include the following very popular benefits:
- A Free Mentor Program - Women preparing for their first triathlon often feel overwhelmed and nervous since they don't know what to expect in training and on race day. The SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon will provide every participant the opportunity to sign up for an experienced mentor who will provide information and support. "We want to ensure that every participant has a safe, fun and memorable experience, and our Mentor Program will help do just that" said Head Mentor, Erin Savarese.
- Free Training Plans - The SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon has partnered with Active.com to offer free training plans to all race registrants. Race participants can sign up for a beginner, intermediate or advanced plan, depending upon their race goals, fitness level and triathlon experience. Schedules will be e-mailed to participants each night with their workout for the next day.
- Club Challenge - The SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon also includes a Club Challenge to encourage women to get fellow club members to participate. Points will be awarded for top overall and age-group finishes, as well as participation by racers and volunteers. The team with the most points will win a special trophy and an American Express gift card for each finisher on the winning club team.
- Once again, a portion of the proceeds from the SheROX Philadelphia Triathlon will be donated to the Teal Ribbon Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to raising funds to advance ovarian cancer research, advocate for early diagnostic treatment and to improve the lives of ovarian cancer survivors.
