Colorado Springs, CO - Racing through freezing mud and ice in Kansas City, Kansas, CTS Athlete and coach Katie Compton (Spike Shooter) won the 2007 US National Cyclocross Championship, her fourth in four years, on Sunday, December 16. Currently ranked #2 in the world in UCI points, Compton rode away from the field early in the 4-lap event and was never again challenged by second-placed rider Georgia Gould (Luna Chix).
Her coach, CTS Premier Coach Craig Griffin, commented, “Katie rode a great race on a terribly challenging course. She’s in great shape, but she knows she has plenty of work to do before the World Championships. She got sick on her last trip to Europe and the illness affected her training and recovery for a few weeks. But now that she’s healthy and strong again, she has the time and motivation necessary to win Worlds at the end of January.”
2007 has been incredibly successful for the 29-year-old Colorado Springs resident. In January, at the end of the 2006-2007 cyclocross season, she earned a silver medal at the World Championships – the highest placing ever by an American woman at that event. Following a well-deserved break, she returned to competition in the fall and started the 2007-2008 cyclocross season with a string of five consecutive victories. In fact, with the exception of one race where she dropped out due to illness, Katie finished first or second in every race she entered before the US National Championships in Kansas City.
With another stars-and-stripes jersey on her back, Katie will return to Europe with the goal of winning the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in Treviso, Italy on January 26-27, 2008.
