OTTAWA – Athletics Canada announced today that 6 athletes have qualified for the 2008 World Indoor Championships in Athletics with four days remaining in the qualification period. The World Indoor Championships will be held in Valencia, Spain March 7 to 9.
Dylan Armstrong from Kamloops, BC qualified in the shot put. Armstrong, who made the final at the 2007 World Championships, achieved his performance of 19.91 metres on February 2 at the Cargill Games in Winnipeg.
Mike Mason from Nanoose Bay, BC qualified in the high jump January 19 in Seattle with a jump of 2.30 metres. The jump was a personal best for Mason who is the reigning Canadian high jump champion.
Megan Metcalfe of Edmonton, AB will compete in the 3000 metres. Metcalfe qualified on January 26 crossing the line in Boston in 8:52.85. Metcalfe holds the Canadian 10km road race crown and won gold at last summer’s Pan American Games in the 5000 metres.
Priscilla Lopes-Schliep from Whitby, ON qualified in the 60 metre hurdles on February 1. Lopes, who recently got married, achieved the performance in New York at the Millrose Games with a time of 7.95 seconds.
Hilary Stellingwerff from Guelph, ON will compete in the 1500 metres. A veteran of the 2007 World Championships in the same event, Stellingwerff qualified for the team in Karlsruhe, Germany on February 10 with a time of 4:10.32. Stellingwerff is the current Canadian 1500 metres champion.
Angela Whyte from Edmonton, AB will join Lopes-Schliep at the start line in the 60 metre hurdles. Whyte, who qualified for the final at Worlds this summer, registered her performance on February 2 in Moscow, ID with a time of 7.96 seconds.
The qualification period began on January 1 and concludes on Monday February 18. The team will then be announced on February 19th, and depart for Spain March 1.
