BOSTON (23-Feb) -- Forty-two year-old Alisa Harvey of Manassas, Va., broke her own U.S. indoor masters record for 800m in her qualifying heat on the first day of the AT&T USA Indoor Championships here.

Harvey, who was born in 1965, finished third in the first of three heats in 2:06.08, breaking her own American W40 mark of 2:07.08 set at the Penn State National Invitational in State College, Pa., on January 26. In addition, she was the last of six qualifiers to make tomorrow's final.

"I was running a smart race," said Harvey who needed to be reminded by a reporter that she had just broken her own record. "I'm pleased. Forty-two years-old you can't ask for more than that."

When asked what her secret was for running so well into her 40's, Harvey said: "I wish I knew. I think it's good genes (mom and dad) and going to bed early."

Nicole Cook led all qualifiers into tomorrow's final. The top-2 finishers earn provisional berths on the U.S. team for the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain, next month.
