The “Ottawa Winterman Marathon” is coming to Ottawa on February 28, 2009! Winterman, the National Capital’s newest winter event, will consist of an official marathon, a half marathon, 10Km, 5Km, as well as relays. There will be “events for everyone - from start to finish”.
Terry McKinty, Partner, Somersault Promotions, and Lawrence Conway, Director, Search and Rescue Global I, made the joint announcement of this exciting new event on the National Capital scene, today in Ottawa.
“We have always wanted to add a winter event to our portfolio, so when SAR Global I came to us with the idea of forming a partnership to establish a winter marathon here in Ottawa, we were excited to accept the offer and start making plans.” stated Mr. McKinty. “What makes us keen on the project is that the event is not ice or snow dependent, and with the winters we have been having lately, a major running event makes sense.”
“Having worked for Somersault Promotions in their successful summer triathlon and road running program, to raise funds for SAR Global I, we felt that Somersault would be a strong partner in building a winter marathon, in the world’s second coldest capital.’” said Mr. Conway. “This joint project will be an important one for the region, and it will be a major fundraiser for SAR Global I, allowing us to maintain our important regional, volunteer based search and rescue operation capability.”
Work is continuing on plans for the Ottawa Winterman Marathon, and more event details will be announced over the next 2 months as they become available. Entry to Winterman will open on Ottawa Race Weekend, May 24-25, 2008. Its mission is to reduce the frequency and severity of missing person incidents in these regions through the development and implementation of efficient and effective Search and Rescue (SAR) prevention and response programs.
