Michelle Lilienthal Highlights Pre-race Seminar
If you are training for a race during Grandma's Marathon weekend then you won’t want to miss the annual Gearing Up for Grandma's pre-race seminar on Saturday, April 5 beginning at 9 a.m. Join Duluth Clinic Sports Medicine, the Duluth News Tribune and Grandma's Marathon for this free event being held in the Duluth Clinic’s First Street Building, 420 East First Street.
The seminar will feature Michelle Lilienthal, one of the country’s top female long-distance runners, who will compete next month at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Women’s Marathon Trials in Boston. The top three finishers earn a spot in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in August. Lilienthal, 25, qualified for the Olympic Trials by running a personal-best 2:35:51 at the 2006 USA Marathon Championships in St. Paul.
A seven-time state champion in track and cross-country at Iowa City High School, Lilienthal attended the University of Wisconsin, where she earned All-Big Ten honors. She has been a member of Team USA Minnesota since August 2007. Team USA Minnesota is a coordinated effort to bring local resources together to dramatically improve post-collegiate American distance running and to develop future Olympians.
In addition, Dr. Kenji Sudoh, a Duluth Clinic Sports Medicine orthopedist, will give advice on injury prevention and proper training techniques, and Jim Stukel, co-owner of The Athlete's Foot, will offer tips on purchasing the correct type of running shoe. Duluth News Tribune sports writer Kevin Pates will serve as master of ceremonies. Following the individual presentations, a question and answer session will be held with all of the event speakers.
