INDIANAPOLIS - The four national governing bodies based in Indianapolis - USA Diving, USA Gymnastics, U.S. Synchronized Swimming and USA Track & Field - are relocating within downtown Indianapolis. USA Track & Field, the National Governing Body [NGB] for track and field, long-distance running and race walking, this week will move its national offices as the first step of a transition that will see the four NGBs combine forces and office space.
The remaining three will relocate later in the year: U.S. Synchronized Swimming in August, USA Gymnastics in September and USA Diving in October. The four organizations will share more than 32,000 square feet of office space.
With the demolition of the RCA Dome on Capitol Ave. - USATF's home for the last 28 years - looming later this summer, the organization on Friday will move to new offices at 132 East Washington Street.
USATF has called Indianapolis home since 1980, and USA Diving has been in the city since its inception in 1981. Both USA Gymnastics and U.S. Synchronized Swimming moved to Indianapolis in 1983. USA Gymnastics has been based in the Pan Am Building since 1987.
The strong relationship between the city and Olympic organizations was a critical factor in seeking to find suitable office space in the city. By next year, the four organizations will have brought at least 14 major national events to Indianapolis in the past five years, with an estimated economic impact of more than $50 million.
"Indianapolis has always been a strong supporter of Olympic sports, from the city management all the way through the community itself," said Bill Roe, President of USATF. "We have staged many of our biggest events in Indianapolis, including Olympic Trials, national championships and our Annual Meeting, so remaining here was our top priority. Our new office space will accommodate our future growth and provide a dynamic, professional space that reflects our organizational image."
"Indianapolis and the Indiana Sports Corporation continue to be great partners for amateur sports organizations," said Terry Harper, Executive Director of U.S. Synchronized Swimming. "This opportunity is yet another indication why we all want to stay in this wonderful city."
In the new space on East Washington Street, the NGBs will be able to build out to their specifications and maximize efficiencies such as shared common spaces and office systems. Street signage and other improvements are in the works as well.
"USA Diving needed more room to accommodate our growing staff. When we were approached with the opportunity to collaborate with Gymnastics, Track & Field and Synchronized Swimming, we were excited by the possibilities," said Debbie Hesse, USA Diving CEO. "The City of Indianapolis has been tremendously supportive of USA Diving, and our new office gives us the opportunity to remain downtown near our National Training Center."
"USA Gymnastics has been proud to call Indianapolis home since 1983," said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. "We appreciate the support the city and the Indiana Sports Corporation has shown us since we moved to Indianapolis and in finding space that can accommodate our current and future needs."
The new building address for the four organizations will be: 132 East Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46204. Phone and fax numbers will remain the same.
