After their dramatic victories at last month’s World Indoor Championships, Russian Yelena Soboleva and Stefan Holm of Sweden were selected the European Athletes of the Month for March, European Athletics (EA) announced.
In a thrilling race, Soboleva lowered the world indoor record for the second time in 2008 in Valencia to capture the gold in 3:57.71. In February, she set her first world record of the year, 3:58.05, at the national championships in Moscow. Soboleva was also the fastest in the world indoors over 800m, with her 1:56.49 performance, also at the Russian national championships.
Despite several seasons among the world’s fastest, her Valencia gold was the first for the 25-year-old.
Holm, the reigning Olympic champion, collected his fourth world indoor title in Valencia, defeating a strong field with a 2.36m/7-8 ¾ clearance. A world class competitor for over a decade, the 31-year-old will be aiming to become the first man in history to defend an Olympic high jump title this summer in Beijing.
Holm is scheduled to begin his outdoor season at the MAI Galan meet on June 3, in Malmo, Sweden.
