Bronze medallists Don, Johns and Avil in action in Korea - Ironman World Champion Chrissie Wellington set for World Cup debut
British triathletes secured three bronze medals from the opening three races on the BG Triathlon World Cup circuit as it travelled through Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
This weekend’s race takes place in Tongyeong, South Korea; and all three bronze medallists, Tim Don, Andrew Johns and Hollie Avil, will be in action.
Don has accumulated a third and fifth from his opening two races as he continues his preparation heading towards the final British Triathlon Olympic qualification race in Madrid on 25 May. The 2006 World Champion has clocked some of the fastest run splits of this year’s series and should go well if he makes the front pack on the 40km cycle leg.
2007 World and European Junior Champion, Hollie Avil, made headlines with her debut world cup bronze in Ishigaki, Japan, two weeks ago. In out sprinting home favourite Juri Ide, at just eighteen years and one day old, she became the first triathlete in history to make the top three in their debut world cup race.
Andrew Johns made his world cup debut in 1995 and looks to be in fine form in a distinguished career which has included a World Championship silver and a two European Championship crowns. Coming off a spell of Ironman racing he carries great strength into the world cup race with a confidence boosting bronze in New Zealand at the start of the month.
Chrissie Wellington became the first Briton to win the Ironman World Championships in October of last year, having only turned professional at the start of 2007. The 2006 Age Group (amateur) Triathlon World Champion will be making her first world cup start over the much shorter distance of 1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run compared to her usual 3.86km swim, 180km cycle, 42km run in the Ironman. Chrissie won Ironman Australia just three weeks ago.
