Triathlon: Ironman - a hero from cinema or a hero in triathlon?

Watch over 50 IAAF Events Live and On-Demand at WCSN.com

Seek justice and save the innocent… swim 3.8km, cycle 180km and run a marathon… Movie theatres or Nice and its hinterland? What would you prefer? Iron man the movie opens tomorrow while Ironman France will take place in June. If the second option appeals to you, come and show your admiration for 2500 flesh and blood triathletes on 22 June at 6h30 when the start is given on the Promenade des Anglais.

Iron man the movie will open tomorrow in France. If you would like to discover heroes that do not come from a comic book but who have a real life, come see them on 22 June in Nice, on the Promenade des Anglais. Every registered athlete for the Ironman France is a hero! Every day he has to make choices and balance his life: organize training, job and family life, balance nutrition and a rigorous diet in order to always be up for a challenge.

The average Ironman France hero is male, 38 years of age, an age group athlete and comes to Nice with his family. He will spend a couple of days vacating right after the event in the region. He particularly appreciates this Ironman for its organization, the countryside and the welcoming locals. Many females participate and appreciate the race for the same reasons, as explained by Carla, Ironman France 2007 participant from the Netherlands: “The surroundings of the race are very beautiful. We had a great time in Nice before and during the race. It was well-organized and the volunteers and very friendly French people helped us all the way to the Finish Line. It was a great experience!"

Our average hero will get up early on race day, will have copious breakfast, and will go to the Promenade des Anglais for a last check of his material before waiting for the start gun to go off and his long day of effort to begin. 2500 athletes will jump into the waters like our hero, with the rising sun and thousands of spectators cheering him on even at this early hour. After 12 hours and 15 minutes, after 3.8km of swimming, 180km of cycling and 42.195km of running, he will cross the Finish Line and he will be celebrated like a star by his friends and family, by the organizers and the volunteers. He will have the satisfying feeling of having surpassed his limits and having accomplished something great. In spite of the fatigue, the suffering and the hurting body, he will be as happy as ever!

The “winning hero” of the past two editions is Marcel Zamora. Marcel also beat the record dating from 2006 with his finishing time of 8:33:56. The fourth edition in 2008 will be full of suspense as to whether Marcel will win the Ironman France for a third consecutive time. On the female side, Alexandra Louison won in 2007 with 9:49:11. Will she be successful once again?

Which do you prefer? Fiction or reality? Sitting in front of a big screen in an obscured movie theatre, of rather out on the beach, under the shining sun with animations and sports? It is not too late! Even if you did not sign up for the race, you can still participate as a volunteer or spectator and cheer for 2500 real-life heroes all day long. Highlight 22 June in your agendas, it will be the day of show & sports on the Promenade des Anglais!
