Clement, Demus set world leaders in Jamaica

Kerron Clement and LaShinda Demus each set world leading marks in 400m hurdles action Saturday night at the 2008 Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston, Jamaica.

The reigning world champion, Clement won the men's race in 47.79 seconds, finishing ahead of Jamaica's Danny McFarlane, who was the runner-up in 48.74 and American Michael Tinsley (3rd-48.84). Clement bettered the previous 2008 world best of 48.32 by 2005 world champion Bershawn Jackson set April 19 in Lawrence, Kans.

2005 World Outdoor Championships silver medalist LaShinda Demus won the women's 400m hurdles in the world leading time of 54.83 seconds. Jamaican Shevon Stoddart was second in 55.68, with American Markita James third in 56.79. Demus' performance bettered the previous world best of 54.97 by Tiffany Williams posted April 12 in Coral Gables, Fla.

Other U.S. winners included reigning world 100m and 200m champion Tyson Gay, who captured the men's 200 meters in 20.00 seconds, while 19-year-old Bianca Knight defeated Jamaican Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown in the women's 200 meters. Knight crossed the finish line in 22.62 seconds, with Campbell-Brown finishing as the runner-up in 22.93.

Additionally, 2006 IAAF Athlete of the Year Sanya Richards was victorious in the women's 400 meters in 50.60 seconds, defeating Jamaicans Novlene Williams-Mills (51.63) and Sonita Sutherland (52.94).

Also in Kingston, 2007 World Championships 200m silver medalist Usain Bolt excited the home crowd in winning the men's 100 meters in the second fastest time in history of 9.76 seconds. Darvis Patton was the runner-up in 10.08 seconds.

Felix and Richards to do double duty in Zurich

Osaka triple gold medalist Allyson Felix and two-time IAAF Golden League winner Sanya Richards will go head-to-head in the women's 200 and 400 meters at the 2008 Weltklasse Zürich, meet organizers announced Monday. The winner of each event will receive $16,000 in prize money. There will be an additional bonus of 500 grams of gold up for grabs for the athlete that wins both races.

The fifth of six Golden League meets, Weltklasse Zurich will take place on August 29, just five days after the closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The men's 400 at Zurich also promises to be a highlight of the evening. Olympic and two-time world champion Jeremy Wariner and 2007 World silver medalist LaShawn Merritt, the current world leader, have both committed to run.
