INDIANAPOLIS -- Fans were part of the action of the 2008 Indoor Visa Championship Series like never before with USATF's new Pick-N-Win Fantasy Game. By picking a 'team' for each stop of the Visa Championship Series, one lucky and skillful fan - James Dunaway of Austin, Texas - won a trip to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials - Track & Field in Eugene, Oregon or other great prizes!
With the 2008 Outdoor Visa Championship Series just over 1 week away, kicking off with the adidas Track Classic May 18 in Carson, Calif., fans can take part in the action once again, competing for prizes with thousands of dollars!
How it works
Fans create their ultimate track and field team each week by going to www.visachampionshipseries.com and selecting the athletes they thought were going to compete well at that week's meet.
Each Visa Championship Series meet is "virtually" scored, with 10 points going to the first-place athlete in each event, 8 points to the second-place athlete, 6 points to the third-place athlete and so on down to sixth place. The athletes chosen by the fans scored points for their team.
During the indoor season, after the conclusion of the 2008 AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Dunaway's team had scored the most points during the Indoor Visa Championship Series. He won a grand prize trip for two to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field, presented by Visa. David Donley won the overall second-place prize, a $250 Visa Gift Card and Nike gift bag, including but not limited to a Nike/USATF duffel bag, jacket, t-shirt and cap. Anthony DeSain won the third-place prize, a $100 Visa gift card and Nike gift bag.
Advice from the top
Dunaway's strategy in winning the Pick-N-Win Fantasy Game was more involved than simply picking the winner of each event during the series. "I tried to figure out who had the best chance of not flopping, in other words, the basic game is that you have to score better than 80% to have a chance," he said. "You do your best to pick who is going to win, but don't pick somebody, like say a pole vaulter, who is very good but no heights a lot. He might win, but he also might score zero points. It's all about playing the percentages."
