REAL,- BERLIN-MARATHON, Berlin, Germany, Sunday, September 28. ENTRANT CAPACITY OF 40,0000 REACHED.
The real,- BERLIN-MARATHON, part of the World Marathon Majors series, has hit its capacity of 40,000 entrants earlier than ever before. The race, which has hosted five world records over the last ten years, will be celebrating its 35th running this year. The current world record mark of 2:04:26 by Haile Gebrselassie was set on the flat and fast Berlin course last year.
TWIN CITIES MARATHON, Minneapolis, Minn., Sunday, October 5. NEW RADIO PARTNERSHIP.
Organizers announced that CBS Radio-Minneapolis Media Corporation had become the event's new radio partner. In an exclusive radio partnership, marathon week messages will be broadcast on 104.1 Jack FM, 102.9 LITE FM and WCCO Radio. The partnership adds to the current media presence of major media partners KARE 11 and Pioneer Press and gives the marathon organization a voice in the radio market. “Partnering with the CBS Radio team reflects our mission to provide community supported, nationally recognized events that attract athletes of all ages and abilities,” said Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. executive director Virginia Brophy Achman. “The reach and coverage these three stations will bring to our events will mean more families and athletes from across the state will be made aware of the opportunities available on race weekend.”
GRANDMA'S MARATHON, Duluth, Minn., Sunday, June 22. REGISTRATION HITS RECORD.
Grandma's Marathon, America's premiere summertime marathon, announced the registration totals for next weekend’s 32nd annual event had hit a new record. A record 9,888 participants are signed up, topping last year’s total of 9,747. This is the 14th consecutive year that the Two Harbors to Duluth 26.2-mile race has reached its capacity. The Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, now in its 18th year, also reached a new high with 6,619 runners registered. The first event in the three-race weekend, the 15th annual William A. Irvin 5K, has 1,341 registrants. In all, 17,849 people are registered to compete (9,636 men, 8,213 women) during Grandma’s Marathon weekend.
INDIAN PATH MEDICAL CENTER & SUNTRUST BANK CRAZY 8'S 8-K, Kingsport, Tenn., Saturday, July 12. WOMEN'S CHAMPION KIMAIYO TO RETURN.
Ogla Kimaiyo of Kenya will return to the Crazy 8's 8-K to defend her title, organizers said today. Including Crazy 8s, Kimaiyo won six major races in 2007, competing mostly in Mexico and South America. She recently returned to the U.S. and ran away with the Mercedes Benz Cotton Row 10-K in Huntsville, Ala., over the Memorial Day weekend. The Crazy 8's is the home of both the men's and women's fastest times for 8 km on a record-standard course: 22:02.2 by Peter Githuka (KEN) 1996 and 24:27.8 by Asmae Leghzaoui (MAR) 2002 (Leghzaoui was later convicted of a doping violation).
MT. WASHINGTON ROAD RACE, Pinkham Notch, N.H., Saturday, June 21. NEW ENGLAND HOSTS TEVA USA MOUNTAIN RUNNING TEAM SELECTION RACE. The 48th edition of the Mt. Washington Road Race, America's toughest all-uphill road race, will serve as a selection race for the USA Mountain Running Team. The top four U.S. male finishers and the top U.S. female finisher will be named to the team (must be current USATF members). The 10-member open squad of six men (four to score) and four women (three to score) and the seven-member junior squad of four junior men (three to score) and three junior women (two to score) is slated to compete in the 24th World Mountain Running Trophy race on September 14 in Sierre, Crans- Montana, Switzerland.
