Mercedes Mile To Be Held In Cambridge, Ontario Tomorrow
CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO-----June 13th, 2008---- The Kenyan connection at the Mer-cedes-Benz Classic Mile continues Saturday June 14th, 2008 when Amos Munyua lines up against his countryman Vincent Rono in the feature men’s mile race.
The event will be held for the fifth consecutive year at Cambridge’s Galt Collegiate In-stitute. The winner, if he breaks four minutes for the classic distance, will win a Mer-cedes- Benz B200 sedan.
Kenyan runners have won the race the last three years.
Munyua, who has been living in Toronto the past seven months has run the 1,500m in a time of 3:34 while Vincent Rono was the 2006 NCAA 1,500m champion. A year ago he set a University of South Alabama school record when he ran the distance in 3:37.96
A year ago, Shedrack Korir of Kenya the younger brother of two time winner Laban Rotich claimed the car in a new meet record of 3:56.05. Rotich won a car in 2005.
Korir had confirmed his participation but Athletics Kenya have summoned all Kenyan Olympic team contenders home for a training camp. Korir is the 2007 IAAF World Championship bronze medal.
The Mercedes-Benz Classic Mile has attracted worldwide attention and is held on the crushed brick track at Ontario’s oldest high school, Galt C.I.
