Bob Ingalls, the race director of the Utica Boilermaker 15-K from 2001 to 2007, died on July 2 of pancreatic cancer. He was 66.
"He was a dedicated and extremely generous and kind person who loved this community," Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito of Rome, N.Y., told the Observer Disptach newspaper.
According to a statement prepared by the race, which is set for this Sunday in Utica, N.Y., Ingalls had volunteered for the race for over 20 years before becoming race director. "We are incredibly saddened by Bob's death," the statement read. "Today, our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Bob didn't want his passing to diminish the enthusiasm and positive energy that the Boilermaker generates. We will do our best to see that this year's event remains the celebration of fun, fitness and community that it always is."
Ingalls, who enjoyed a varied career in law enforcement, had previously passed the race director's job to Jim Stasaitis.
