Hoffa, Oliver prevail in London
Mid-way through the Aviva London Super Grand Prix, several Americans
excelled against formidable international competition.
Reigning World Outdoor champion Reese Hoffa edged out two time Olympic
silver medalist Adam Nelson for the victory in the men's shot put. Hoffa
produced a 21.13 meter/69 feet 4 inch throw to claim first, while Nelson
finished behind in second, with a toss of 21.07m/69-1.5. Two time World
Indoor champion Christian Cantwell claimed fourth with a toss of
20.52m/67-4, behind Tomasz Majewski of Poland who finished third with
20.97m/68-9.75.
In the men's 110 meter hurdles, 2008 Olympic Trials champion David
Oliver topped the field, crossing the line in 13.20 seconds. Oliver was
followed by three other U.S. athletes in Anwar Moore, Antwon Hicks, and
Aries Merritt, finishing second (13.52), third (13.58) and fifth (13.61)
respectively.
Double World Outdoor gold medalist Bernard Lagat claimed third in the
men's one mile with a time of 3:55.20. Lagat finished behind Shedrack
Kibet Korir of Kenya and Andrew Baddeley of Great Britain, with times of
3:54.68 and 3:54.76 respectively.
In the women's 1,500m, Olympic Trials runner-up Erin Donohue finished
second in 4:09.63, behind Lisa Dobriskey of Great Britain, with a
winning time of 4:08.97.
2004 Olympic gold medalist and World record holder Yelena Isinbayeva
claimed the women's pole vault with a jump of 4.93m/16-2. American
record holder Jenn Stuczynski secured second with a 4.81m/15-9.25 jump.
In the women's 200m, Bianca Knight finished second in 22.79 seconds,
behind Sherone Simpson of Jamaica, who won with a time of 22.70. Two
time World Outdoor champion Allyson Felix finished fourth in 23.00
seconds.
