Triathlon: Who are the participants at Monaco Ironman 70.3?

There are 1140 athletes waiting for Sunday 7 September 2008 for the 4th Edition of Monaco Ironman 70.3. The triathlon long distance event consists of 1.9km of swimming, 90km of cycling and 21.1km of running. They come from various horizons but have one common goal: to reach the finish line and taste glory!

On 7 September, at 7h00, on the Plage du Larvotto, triathletes who have spent long months training, will depart for the 2008 Monaco Ironman 70.3. They come from all around the world and have the same motivation: manage their practice of the swimming, the cycle and the running as well as their private life. Business, family and training summarizes their everyday life during the year. Among the 1140 subscribers, that is one third more than the last year, 3 % are Pros. Most are therefore amateurs and approximately two thirds of them are foreign. About forty nationalities will be represented in the event such as Great Britain (19 %), Germany (8 %) and Italy (7 %), as well as Canada, Russia and Peru.

The typical athlete is a 38-year-old man. He is married, has a good family situation and has done a superior training course. The youngest subscriber is 19 years old and the eldest is 71 years old. Half of them will experience their first Ironman 70.3. Among the competitors who will be on the starting line, 15 % are women, that is 172 participants. They are from 20 to 65 years old, and 85 of them will run their first Ironman 70.3. With regards to the Relay Challenge, about fifty teams are waiting for this first edition. They represent companies such as HSBC, Texas Instruments or still BNP, and countries such as New Zealand, Thailand and Lebanon.

Proof that the Monaco Ironman 70.3 participants come from various horizons, the Abramowski family consists of the parents, the son and the daughter who all decided to participate together in this 4th edition in spite of different activities and being from a remote place. Their objective is clear, they want to pick up a qualifying slot for the World Championship Ironman or Ironman 70.3: "If we qualify for Florida or Hawaii, we shall have an even bigger challenge for the family!".
