Triathlon: Long Distance Racers Earn Seven Medals in Holland

ALMERE, Holland (September 1, 2008) -- U.S. athletes took home seven medals at the International Triathlon Union Long Distance Triathlon World Championships in Almere, Holland on August 31.

A total of 108 athletes were part of Team USA, including seven competing in the elite race. More than 1,400 athletes (including 66 elites) from around the world took part in the 4k swim, 120k bike, 30k run event.

The age group medals included three gold, a silver, and three bronze. The golds were all won by female athletes: Aimee Warnke (F18-19), Ann Ciaverella (F35- 39), and Mary DeNitto (F60-64). John Weber (M70-74) won silver, while Sean Schnur (M25-29), Nicole Gross (F25-29) and Terri Walters (F40-44) earned bronze.

In the elite races, Kevin Lisska led the U.S. male athletes with an eighth-place finish among the 43 competitors, while Kelly Couch was 13th of the 23 elite women racing.
