Paralympics: Stilwell wins 2nd gold medal at Beijing Games

OTTAWA – Michelle Stilwell of Nanoose Bay, BC won her second gold medal at the Paralympic Games today by finishing first in the women’s 200-metres wheelchair T52 classification race. Stilwell finished the race in a new Paralympic record of 19.97 seconds, edging out Tomomi Yamaki of Japan who finished in 21.00. Also today Jason Dunkerley of Ottawa, ON and guide runner Greg Dailey from Toronto won bronze in the men’s 1500-metres visually impaired T11 in 4:12.53. Zhen Zhang of China won gold in the 1500-metres in 4:10.05. The two medals today bring the track and field team’s total at the Games to 18 (9 Gold, 1 Silver, 8 Bronze).

Ilana Duff of Saskatoon, SK placed 5th in the women’s 200-metres wheelchair T53 in a time of 31.47 seconds. Gold was won by Lisha Huang of China in a World Record time of 29.17.

Chantal Petitclerc’s quest for her fifth gold medal at these Games is still alive after she advanced to the women’s 1500-metres wheelchair T54 final. Petitclerc won Heat 1 in a seasonal best 3:29.87. Diane Roy of Hatley, QC also advanced to the final finishing 2nd in Heat 1 behind Petitclerc in a seasonal best of 3:30.07. Tracey Ferguson of Holland Landing, ON failed to advance placing 6th in Heat 2 in 3:36.40.

Josh Cassidy of Oakville, ON and Michel Filteau of St-Jean Baptiste, QC failed to advance to the final of the men’s 1500-metres wheelchair T54. Cassidy was 4th in Semifinal 1 in 3:09.72 and Filteau placed 9th in Semifinal 3 in 3:20.01.

Jon Dunkerley and guide runner Sean Young, both from Ottawa, ON, did not advance to the men’s 400-metres visually impaired T11 final. They finished 4th in Semifinal 2 in a time of 54.27 seconds.

Colin Mathieson of Winnipeg, MB didn’t make it out of the men’s 100-metres wheelchair T54 rounds. Mathieson was 5th in Heat 2 of Round 1 in a time of 15.15 seconds.
