NYRR will announce top five moments in 50-year history during ING New York City Marathon race week
NEW YORK - (September 15, 2008) - Fan voting to select the top five moments in New York Road Runners' 50-year history will open on Monday, September 15, and continue through Friday, September 26, it was announced by New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg. Fans can vote by logging on to NYRR.org and selecting their favorite from a list of 15 New York Moments that has been complied by a panel of journalists and NYRR officials.
"New York Road Runners has such a rich history, and it was only fitting to delve into the archives and rediscover some of the defining moments that have shaped our organization," Wittenberg said. "Now it's time for the running public to weigh in and participate in our anniversary celebration."
The top five New York Moments will be unveiled during the week leading up to the 39th running of the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2. The daily countdown to top New York Moment will begin with an announcement of number five at the news conference on Monday, October 27, and end with the #1 moment on Friday, October 31.
The voting is part of the 18-month long celebration of the NYRR's 50th anniversary that will extend into next year.
Beginning on June 4 - the actual anniversary date of the organization's inception 50 years ago - NYRR began posting 50 short videos that each commemorated one defining moment in NYRR history. Subjects ranged from defining New York City Marathon victories and losses to the creation of the NYRR Foundation kids fitness programs to other significant races on the organization's calendar, such as the NYRR New York Mini 10K.
