Athletics: Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Makes Texas History

Inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and ½ Marathon Approaching Sell Out

San Antonio, TX (October 15, 2008) –With over 28,000 registered participants, the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio has officially become the largest marathon and ½ marathon in Texas history. The inaugural race will be capped at 30,000 participants, so prospective runners are encouraged to register now before the race reaches its capacity as soon as next week.

"We are thrilled at the response for the inaugural Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio," said Lucy Diaz, event manager. "When we started planning this event, we estimated a field of 15,000 runners and walkers, and now, a year later, we have capped the event at 30,000 participants. San Antonio’s appeal as a running destination has been demonstrated by the phenomenal response as well as the reputation of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series."

The event recently announced that the British rock group The Cult will headline the post-race concert on Sunday, November 16, 2008. Held at the Alamodome, over 30,000 runners, walkers, volunteers and music fans from around the world will celebrate at the show.

The inaugural race will feature ideal running weather, as well as live bands and local high school cheer squads to provide encouragement to runners at each mile along the route. The race course begins in scenic Lions Park and proceeds downtown, passing the legendary Alamo, before heading into the Southtown Arts District. The marathon course continues past the historic missions and through the wooded Mission Trails National Park, which runs along side the picturesque San Antonio River. The final straightaway and finish line are located at the foot of the Alamodome, site of the Finish Line Fiesta.

All Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio participants and volunteers receive free entry into the headliner concert. Race participants gain entry by presenting their race number at the door. Doors open at 6:30 pm, with an awards ceremony at 7:00 pm. The music begins with an opening performance by Austin-based Vallejo at 7:45 pm. The Cult is scheduled to take the stage at 8:30 pm (concert times are subject to change).

Additional concert tickets can be purchased for $25 online at the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio website www.rnrsa.com or at the Health & Fitness Expo on November 14 and 15 for $30, as well as at the Alamodome box office.
