OTTAWA - Contrary to articles published yesterday, Athletics Canada announced today that no decision has been made on the future of track and field Head Coach Les Gramantik and he has not been terminated.
Athletics Canada is confirming that a high performance review is being conducted to ensure the organization is continuing to move in a positive direction. "This review is underway to ensure we are putting the right people in the right places in order to continue our path towards achieving sustainable high performance results," said Joanne Mortimore, Chief Executive Officer. Mortimore adds, "Through this review Athletics Canada wants to ensure we are maximizing Les's strengths as a coach, but at this point no decision have been made, the decision making process is still underway with Les serving an integral role in it."
Les Gramantik has been involved with Athletics Canada for many years and plans on being involved for years to come, "I am not leaving Athletics Canada, I absolutely have not been terminated." Gramantik led the track and field team to success in 2007 at the Pan American Games and at the World Championships. Recently he led the team in Beijing at the Olympic Games where the team placed 16th, its best finish in years.
With no decisions made yet, the quadrennial review is underway and based on key objectives such as podium results, partnership relationships and grassroots development, to ensure the sport continues to move forward. The organization has gained a lot of momentum over the past quadrennial and wants to take this unique opportunity with increased funding to chart the course to 2012 and beyond.
