In his final tune up race heading before the AGSI Canadian Cross Country Championships, Speed River Track and Field Club’s Robin Watson showed he is primed to step onto the podium this year after finishing fourth at the 2007 Championships.
Battling muddy conditions and occasional snow flurries, Watson easily captured the Ontario Championships, Sunday in Toronto.
After forming a lead pack with several Speed River teammates and Canada’s top ranked marathoner Dylan Wykes, Watson made a move just before the halfway point and went onto to win by over 20 seconds.
Wykes held on for the silver and was followed in by a wave of Speed River athletes. Cleve Thorson captured the bronze, with teammates Steve Koziarski in fourth and Taylor Milne in sixth.
The Speed River team easily defended their Provincial Championship winning with a near perfect score of 14 the University of Toronto Track Club was second with a score of 36.
In the senior women’s race Laura Moulton was the club’s lone competitor and she placed sixth overall.
With just under two week’s until the Canadian Championships, the Ontario Championships served as one final test before the club prepares to welcome the nation’s finest distance athletes to their home course in the Guelph Arboretum November 29th.
