Athletics: Local Clubs Compete In Regional Qualifier For Nike Cross Nationals

Northeast Regional Championship Held in Wappingers Falls, NY

This weekend, high school cross-country athletes from across the Northeast will come together in Wappingers Falls to toe the line in the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) Northeast regional qualifier for the chance to earn an all-expense paid trip to compete in the NXN national championship. Nike Cross Nationals is the country’s only team and individual national championship for high-school aged cross-country athletes.

The regional championships will be completed November 15-29, with the 2008 Nike Cross Nationals held on Saturday, December 6, at the Portland Meadows race track in Portland, Ore.

Nine regions--Midwest, Northwest, Heartland, Southwest, South, Northeast, Southeast, California and New York--will each send the top two teams and top five individuals to the national meet.

Nike Athlete Lopez Lomong
The U.S. delegation flag bearer during the opening ceremonies at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Lopez Lomong has overcome an overwhelming array of obstacles in becoming a top American middle distance runner. Lomong was moved to the U.S. to live with a foster family in Tully, N.Y., and became one of the 3,800 resettled youngsters known as the “Lost Boys of Sudan.” Lomong became a U.S. season in July, 2007, while becoming a star middle distance runner at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. He enjoyed his best year in 2007, winning the NCAA Indoor 3,000m title in 7:49.74 and taking the NCAA Outdoor men’s 1,500m crown in 3:37.07. He set a personal best and an NAU school record of 1:45.79 in placing fifth in the 800 meters at the 2007 AT&T USA Track and Field Championships, and he was named NCAA Mountain Region Male Track Athlete of the year by the USTFCCCA.

As the only national cross-country championship for both high school club teams and individuals, Nike Cross Nationals brings together the top cross-country club teams and individuals in America to celebrate the sport, the spirit of teamwork, and the individual commitment and perseverance of high school athletes. The NXN is part of the larger Nike Nationals championship series established in 2004 to help strengthen the national circuit for high school cross country and celebrate the sport.
