Athletics: Racing Solo at the Las Vegas Marathon

December 8, 2008 - (Las Vegas) Racing alone down the Las Vegas Strip, into the Freemont Street Experience and finishing at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino, Nadezhda Tuptova, 33, won in 2:48:20. Second place winner Ramona Sanchez, 31, came in eight minutes later at 2:56:33.

Tuptova uncertain of her lead said through an interpreter “I started by myself, and I finished by myself.” With a relatively downhill course, the greatest challenge for Tuptova was racing solo.

The fairly new Las Vegas race, starting in 2005, attracts close to 15,000 participants from 47 different countries.

In typical Vegas fashion, the race included marriages, renewed wedding vows, several Elvis runners, and a seven-minute firework display to kick off the race.
