Athletics: Kenyan Wins Marathon Powerade Monterrey

MARATÓN POWERADE MONTERREY 2008, by Rubén Romero

Hillary Kimaiyo, from Kenya, won the Marathon Powerade Monterrey on December 14 with a time of 2:09’:54, the fastest time ever registered in a certified marathon in Mexico in the men‘s division. The previous best time run in Mexican territory, was the one of Andres Espinosa, who ran for 2:10:57, in 2001 in the Lala Marathon in Torreón.

Dulce Maria Rodriguez, the Mexican Olympic runner, dominated the women’s division from start to finish to with a time of 2:33:28. The runner’s performances were affected by a heat wave which caused the temperature to rise above 20 degrees C in the final part of the competition. Elite women start the race 17:52 before the elite men, and the first across the finish line wins 100,000 extra pesos.

With his winning time, Kimaiyo earned a total of 700,000 Mexican pesos (some 50,000 USD). The Monterrey marathon has a prize structure of progressive bonuses, which increases the amount of the bonus as the wining time decreases, and offers a total prize money of 185,000 USD.

In spite of the heat, and according to IAAF’s records, Kimaiyo’s time placed the Marathon Powerade Monterrey as the fourth fastest in the American Continent in 2008. Only the marathons of Chicago, Boston and New York have registered faster times this year.
