(Duluth, Minn.) The 20th anniversary of one the Northland's premier road races is bringing improvements to the event’s registration process.
Registration for the 20th annual Fitger’s 5K Run & Walk, scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2009, is being conducted exclusively online. The sign-up period for the race will open Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009 at www.GrandmasMarathon.com with an entry fee of $25. In an effort to become more environmentally-friendly, paper entry forms for the 3.1-mile race will no longer be printed.
"We are extremely excited to bring online registration to this race. Streamlining the registration system is a great benefit to the participants, staff and volunteers,” says Scott Keenan, executive director of Grandma’s Marathon.
Other additions for the 2009 race call for the event to be limited to the first 1,500 runners and walkers who register, and there will be no race-day registration.
The race, which drew a record 1,355 registrants in 2008, begins at 9 a.m. on East Superior Street in front of Fitger’s and travels through downtown Duluth and Canal Park before finishing back at Fitger’s. An awards ceremony and post-race celebration will be held at 10:30 a.m.
All net proceeds benefit the Young Athletes Foundation (YAF), a Grandma's Marathon program focused on the promotion and development of youth athletics throughout St. Louis, Douglas, Lake, Carlton and Cook Counties. Since its inception in 1990, the YAF has contributed more than $325,000 to area nonprofit youth athletic organizations.
