The 103rd Millrose Games, America's oldest indoor track meet, will have both two-time Olympic medalist Bernard Lagat and live television coverage on ESPN2, USA Track & Field announced yesterday. The meet is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 29, at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Lagat, who won both the 1500m and 5000m world titles in Osaka, Japan, in 2007, will be trying for a record 8th Wanamaker Mile title. He's currently tied with Irishman Eamonn Coghlan, the famed Chairman of the Boards, with seven Wanamaker titles. Lagat is also the Wanamaker record holder; he clocked 3:52.87 on the Garden's very tight 145.5m banked track in 2005. Lagat won his first Wanamaker title back in 2001.
The meet will also be benefiting from live television coverage for two hours, beginning at 8:00 p.m. on ESPN2. Organizers will have no choice but to keep the meet on schedule; the Wanamaker Mile is slated to go of at 9:50 p.m., right at the end of the TV window.
