Triathlon: Blueseventy partners new open water training centre

blueseventy has agreed a partnership with the new Lakeside Multisports Centre in Eastleigh, Hampshire. The centre, which is just outside Southampton, is based around an open water swimming lake and will open in April offering free swimming opportunities and an extensive programme of open water, triathlon and the blueseventy aquathlon series. blueseventy will use the centre for product testing and development, and have a full range of wetsuits and swimwear available for trial and purchase.

Lakeside Multisports Centre will open on 3 April and swimming will be free to all for the rest of the month. The centre will offer free swimming to under 16s and over 60s throughout the year, just like other public facilities across the country.

The lake covers 1.6acres, providing clearly marked loops of 400m. Being relatively shallow, the water will warm up nicely as the spring and summer sunshine heat it to an anticipated 20 degrees. Beginners are welcomed and the site is a National Open Water Coaching appointed venue.

Brett Britton of Lakeside Multisports said: “We worked with the British Triathlon Federation and Eastleigh Borough Council to open our doors as a specialist centre for the development of open water swimming and triathlon.

“The venue is perfect for swimming. It’s an ideal size for safety and we have excellent facilities including changing rooms, hot showers, a lecture room and a cafe. It’s also just two minutes off the M27, there’s a railway station 400m away, and there’s plenty of parking.

“Having blueseventy as a partner really enhances our offer; not just in terms of trialling and retailing, but also through their association with athletes such as Olympic open water swimming champion, Maartin van der Weidjen.”

Dean Jackson of blueseventy commented: “With access to open water swimming fairly limited in the UK, it’s really exciting to have a facility that is completely dedicated to swimming and open throughout the year. We will have a full range of wetsuits, goggles and swimwear available for people to try out, which is particularly valuable when buying a wetsuit for the first time to ensure the correct fit and product choice.

“The sport of open water swimming had a tremendous boost when it featured in the 2008 Olympic Games for the first time, and its popularity can only increase in the lead up to hosting the open water events at the Serpentine in 2012.”

In addition to regular open water swimming and coaching, a wide range of swimming and multi sport events will be on offer. The Lakeside website, www.lakesidemultisports.co.uk, is already accepting entries. The Nike Park Run will also start in May.

Lakeside has been chosen by the National Open Water Coaching Association as a registered facility and complies with the criteria as stipulated by the Association. NOWCA Accredited Lakes Offer:

* Excellent Facilities
* Strict Safety & Quality Standards
* Qualified Coaches
* Measured Distances
* Structured Training
* Set swim fees
* A rewarding Experience
