March 2010 - (Jupiter, Florida) Spring means baseball and also the start of the DMSE Sports events calendar which began at the First Annual Spring Training 10K Classic at Roger Dean Stadium, in Jupiter Florida on March 5 & 6, 2010. Roger Dean Stadium is the spring training home to MLB's Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. More than 900 kids participated in a 10K and a fun run during the two day event which benefitted the DMSE Children's Fitness Foundation and the Cardinals/Marlines Fund.
The young participants came from schools in the Jupiter Florida area. The Friday night event consisted of three different distances. Two shorter distances inside the ball park around the warning track and the Kid's Mile. In each race, the Jupiter Police Department participated with this next generation of runners. Florida Marlins outfielder Cameron Maybin welcomed the runners at the finish line and awarded them a medal for their participation.
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Trever Miller participated in the 10K distance. The race took runners through the 6 neighborhoods of Abacoa and finished at home plate of Roger Dean Stadium. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was out there waiting for him to finish.
"It was great to have Trever run the 10K along with the other participants," said Dave McGillivray, President of DMSE Sports. "What a thrill for these young baseball fans and athletes and a memory for these kids in what may have been their first ever race."
The event benefited the DMSE Children's Fitness Foundation and the Cardinals/Marlins Fund. The DMSE Children's Fitness Foundation, founded in, supports non-profit programs that use running as a primary means of promoting physical fitness in children and to help curb the epidemic of childhood obesity.
The Cardinals/ Marlins Fund supports the development of programs for the disadvantaged youths in South Florida. Over the past eight years the Cardinals/ Marlins Fund has contributed over $173,000 to area youth groups.
