BOSTON, MA, USA. Milers Headed for Boston
The second annual B.A.A. Invitational Mile will be held in Boston's Back Bay on Sunday, April 18, the day before the 114th Boston, the Boston Athletic Association reported. The mile, which uses a three-loop course, features both elite and high school races. Defending champion Darren Brown (3:58.35 PB), leads the men's field and will face rivals Garrett Heath (USA), Andy Baddeley (GBR), Juan Luis Barrios (MEX), Mark Draper (GBR) and Ricky Stevenson (GBR). American Olympian Erin Donohue (4:26.48 PB) leads the women's field and will be challenged by Sara Hall (USA), Roisin McGettigan (IRL), Marina Muncan (SRB) and Morgan Uceny (USA). Race winners will pocket $3000 in prize money, part of a $14,500 prize money purse. The course records are 4:11.6 (Brown) and 4:38.6 (Anna Willard). The high school races features athletes from 8 cities and towns along the Boston Marathon course.
JERSEY CITY, NJ, USA. Prize Money Purse Released for Newport 10,000.
The 7th annual Newport 10,000, a 10-kilometer road race, will take place on Saturday, May 8, in Jersey City, just across the Hudson River from New York City. Race director Mark Zenobia said that the event has a $11,450 prize money purse, with $1250 going to the open male and female winners. There is also prize money for USA and USATF-NJ athletes. ROTTERDAM, NED. Kwambai Leads Kenyan Onslaught at Rotterdam.
The 30th Fortis Marathon Rotterdam, scheduled for Sunday, April, 11, will feature eight Kenyans with career best times of 2:08:15 or better, led by James Kwambai, last year's runner-up. In front of thousands of spectators gathered on the Coolsingel last year, Kwambai narrowly lost last year's race to training partner Duncan Kibet. Both men were clocked in 2:04:27, the two fastest marathon times in the world last year. Kwambai, who dropped out of last November's ING New York City Marathon with unexplained abdominal pain, will be challenged by compatriots Vincent Kipruto (2:05:47 PB), Patrick Makau (2:06:14), Daniel Rono (2:06:58), Geoffrey Mutai (2:07:01), Francis Kiprop (2:07:04), Isaac Macharia (2:07:16), and Elias Chelimo Kemboi (2:08:15). Three strong Ethiopians are also entered: Yirdaw Dejene (2:08:30), Dereje Tesfaye (2:08:36) and Feyisa Lelisa (2:08:47). The top Dutchman entered is Koen Raymaekers (2:12:59). China's Zhu Xiaolin leads the women's field (2:23:57 PB), and the race has also recruited Kenya's Anne Kosgei (2:27:46) and Irene Jerotich (2:28:57), Russia's Olga Glok (2:28:27), and the Netherlands' Merel de Knegt (debut).
VIENNA, AUT. Talpos Hopes for Third Vienna City Marathon Victory.
Two-time Vienna City Marathon champion Luminita Talpos of Romania plans to return to the 27th edition of that race on Sunday, April 18, organizers announced. Talpos, who won in 2007 and 2008, will face defending champion Andrea Mayr, the Austrian record holder. No woman has won the Vienna City Marathon three times. Also entered are Kenya's Hellen Kimutai and Ethiopia's Derebe Godana. The women's course record is 2:23:47 by Italy's Maura Viceconte in 2000.
