Ottawa - More than 500 participants are expected this Saturday (June 19) for
the 6th annual Emilie's Run - a women's only 5 km run in memory of Emilie
Mondor. Sponsored by RunnerWeb.com and the Ottawa Citizen and organized by
Somersault Promotions, the event has become a true celebration of women's
health, fitness, running and walking, bringing together women of all ages
and stages.
Emilie Mondor was a world-class runner who ran for Canada at many levels of
international competition, from her junior days up to her participation in
World Championships and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Emily tragically
lost her life shortly after completing a training session along the
Rockcliffe Parkway. Honourary Race Director, Ken Parker of RunnersWeb.com
was Emilie's coach at the time and has turned this run into a celebration of
Emilie's life as well as a celebration of women's running.
As a way of involving the whole family in the day's activities, there is
also the Wylie Ryan Aviation Museum 1 km Kids Run (for kids 10 and under).
Somersault Promotions is proud to have as part of our run series a run for
kids at each of our events over the course of the season. "We feel it's
important to promote a healthy lifestyle not only to our core participants,
the adults, but also to encourage children to be active as well" say the
McKinty's, of Somersault Promotions. "There truly is no greater feeling
than seeing the glowing eyes of a child as he or she crosses the finish line
for the first time".
In order to provide a safe environment for both participants and volunteers,
the Rockcliffe Parkway (Eastern Parkway) will be closed on Saturday June
19th from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. in both directions from Bearbrook/St. Joseph
Blvd. to the Aviation Parkway (Canadian Aviation Museum).
