Athletics: Inaugural Athens, GA Half Marathon To Be Held October 23-24, 2010



Deadline For Early Registration Is July 31, 2010

ATHENS, GA---July 27, 2010---The inaugural Athens, GA Half-Marathon will be held Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24, in lovely, historic Athens, Georgia, home of the University of Georgia and one of the country's most vibrant music scenes.

The deadline for early registration at the $50.00 entry fee is this Saturday, July 31st. After Saturday, the fee goes up to $60.00. Entrants may register on-line at www.athensgahalf.com and www.active.com. Registration forms can also be printed and mailed to AthFest, PO Box 327, Athens, GA 30603.

The race weekend will begin with a Health and Fitness Expo at the downtown Holiday Inn on Saturday, October 23rd from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The Expo will have bargains on running and fitness merchandise, free samples and demonstration of fitness products, and health and fitness exhibits related to running, walking, and overall wellness. The Health and Fitness Expo will be open to all and free of charge.

The Athens, GA Half Marathon will host a Pasta Dinner and Reception at the Holiday Inn for the runners and their guests on Saturday evening at 6:30 PM with special guest speaker, Jeff Galloway. Mr. Galloway is a former Olympic runner and is widely known throughout the world as a highly skilled runner, author of several best-selling books on running, and as a trainer and consultant to over 250,000 runners. Tickets for the Pasta Dinner and Reception can be purchased for in advance at $17.95 when you register at Active.com or at the regular price of $19.95 during the Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday.

Mr. Galloway will be also be conducting a "Galloway Running School" on Saturday, October 23rd, 2010 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The fee is $99.00 per person, which goes directly to help support the race and the mission of AthFest Inc.

The race will start on Sunday, October 24th at 7:00 AM at the corner of Washington Street and College Avenue at the highest point in downtown Athens, winding through the historic UGA campus, past Sanford Stadium (home of Bulldog Football), then following the North Oconee River, through several of Athens' distinctive neighborhoods before heading back down to the river, following the North Oconee River Greenway, finishing in downtown Athens.

Proceeds from the race benefit AthFest, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to arts and music education. AthFest is most widely known for its annual summer music and arts festival. However, AthFest, Inc. has expanded its mission to promote year-round music education in the local schools with their programs AthFest AfterSchool and AthFest InSchool.
