Athletics: USA Mountain/Ultra/Trail titles on the line this weekend



Dobson, Lucas highlight fields at inaugural USA 15 km Trail Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - 2008 Olympian Ian Dobson and his wife Julia Lucas of Eugene, Ore., will make a rare foray into the trail racing scene Saturday at the inaugural USA 15 km Trail Championships in Spokane, Washington.

The championships, hosted by the Spokane Regional Sports Commission, will offer more than $5,000 in prize money and will also feature championships in the masters division and both the open and masters club team divisions.

USA 50 Mile Trail Championships return to White River 50 Mile Endurance Run

Across the state in Enumclaw, Washington, some of the top ultra marathon runners in the U.S. will compete in the USA 50 Mile Trail Championships.

Leading the men's field will be Greg Crowther (Seattle, Wash.), the 2007 USA 50 km champion, while Meghan Arbogast (Corvallis, Ore.), the current USA 100 km champion, will lead both the open and masters women's fields. Roy Pirrung (Sheboygan, Wis.) is among the favorites in the masters men's competition.

Set in the shadow of Mt. Rainier, the championships will feature a total of $6,500 in prize money. Over the 50-mile distance the race course rises and falls a staggering 8,700 feet with a total elevation change of 17,400 feet.

USA 100 Mile Trail Championships set for Ohio

Also on Saturday, the 2010 USA 100 Mile Trail Championships will be hosted by the fourth annual Burning River 100 Mile Endurance Run in Willoughby, Ohio.

This year's field includes respective 2008 and 2009 USA 50 Mile men's champions Eric Grossman (Emory, Va.) and Todd Braje (Arcata, Calif.) and 2006 USA 100 Mile Trail champion Connie Gardner (Medina, Ohio) leads the women's field.

The championships will feature $10,000 in total prize money, including $1,200 each to the respective men's and women's open champions.
