International Distance Added to Amica 19.7 Phoenix on Nov. 7
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Brian Fleischmann, a member of the United States Triathlon Team and former alternate on the United States Olympic Triathlon Team, is among the pros slated to compete at the 2010 Amica 19.7 Phoenix on Sunday, Nov. 7, at Lake Pleasant Park, AZ.
After earning a top 10 finish in the 2009 Ironman 70.3 World Championships last November, Fleischmann has continued his success in 2010. He captured first place at the USA Triathlon Elite Development Race and finished runner-up at the Ironman 70.3 Calgary. Most recently, he placed fourth at the San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz.
"I am looking forward to competing in the Amica 19.7 Phoenix," said Fleischmann, a former ITU Triathlon Team World Champion. "The competition will be tough and the course appears challenging. The race will serve as a great preparation for the 70.3 World Championships."
Fleischmann, of Colorado Springs, CO is one of several professional triathletes expected to participate in the Amica 19.7 Phoenix and compete for a $20,000 prize purse.
Tommy Zaferes, an elite swimmer turned triathlete, will also compete in Phoenix. Zaferes, a former Olympic Trials swimmer once held the national record for the butterfly and was named the California State Swimmer of the Year in 2006.
The Amica 19.7 Phoenix sprint distance is one of two triathlons that will be held at Lake Pleasant Park on Nov. 7. In addition to the sprint distance, an international distance triathlon has been added to the 2010 Amica 19.7 Phoenix at Lake Pleasant Park. The new distance will feature a 1.5 km swim, a 34 km bike ride and a 10 km run.
"Only in its second year, the Amica 19.7 Phoenix is rapidly increasing in popularity. We are pleased to enhance the event with the addition of an international distance for those triathletes who like a longer distance," said Brewer Rowe, race director for the Amica 19.7 Phoenix. "By adding an international distance, the event offers something for a variety of competitors."
The international distance will kick off the day's events at 7 a.m. on Nov. 7. The 19.7 sprint distance, which features a half-mile swim, 16.1-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run, follows at 8 a.m. Both race distances are open to pros and age groupers.
