The World Triathlon Corporation has increased IRONMAN South Africa's IRONMAN World Championship qualifying slots to 50. This is great news for age-group athletes who aspire to race at the birthplace of the IRONMAN.
The announcement comes only three months after IRONMAN South Africa event organisers, World Endurance South Africa, announced in June that qualifying slots would be increased from 30 to 40. The latest increase means that the event's total qualifying slots has now essentially been increased by 20, giving age-group athletes an even greater opportunity to earn a coveted slot to the world's biggest triathlon spectacle.
The Spec-Savers IRONMAN South Africa has grown to be one of the most attractive races on the IRONMAN circuit, boasting a competitive course, scenic route, and an atmosphere to rival the best in the world. In 2011 Chrissie Wellington shattered the then women's IRONMAN world record on what is described as a fast, flat course.
The IRONMAN South Africa slot allocation policy will remain as per normal with 1 qualifying slot allocated equally between men and women for each age group and the additional slots will be rolled down to the age group with the largest number of athletes.
Racing on the Big Island is a dream of thousands of triathletes from around the world. To be part of the history and lore of this prestigious event is something only a few athletes experience in their lifetime, not to mention racing against and alongside the very best in the world. Make that dream a reality at the 2013 Spec-Savers IRONMAN South Africa.
