Athletics: Boston Athletic Association to Receive the Sidney Farber Medical Research Award

The most prestigious accolade awarded by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to be presented on Tuesday, October 16 at B.A.A. Annual Meeting.

BOSTON -- Dana-Farber Cancer Institute today announced that the 2012 recipient of the Sidney Farber Medical Research Award is the Boston Athletic Association. Since 1989, the B.A.A. and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have collaborated to incorporate fundraising initiatives into B.A.A. programming. Since the partnership's origin 24 years ago, and through participants in the B.A.A. Boston Marathon, the B.A.A. Half Marathon, and the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, the Jimmy Fund has raised more than $144 million.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute was among the first organizations accepted by the B.A.A. into its Boston Marathon Official Charity Program in 1990. The Dana-Farber runners annually complement their training regimen for the Boston Marathon with fundraising efforts for the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber, which funds basic research in its earliest stages. Since 2003, the B.A.A. Half Marathon has also served as a platform for fundraising, and combined, the two events combined have raised more than $59 million for adult and pediatric cancer care and research.

"We are thrilled to recognize the Boston Athletic Association with this year's Sidney Farber Medical Research Award for their partnership and dedication in supporting us in the fight against cancer," said Suzanne Fountain, director of the Jimmy Fund. "Since 1989, the Boston Athletic Association has helped us raise millions of dollars to help support cancer care and research, and we are grateful to be continuing to work with the B.A.A. to make a difference in so many lives."

Each September, more than 8,000 walkers participate in the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk, which allows participants to walk the course of the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon to honor friends, family, co-workers, and patients facing all forms of cancer. The Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk is the only event licensed by the B.A.A. to use the Boston Marathon name and the historic, 26.2-mile route from Hopkinton to Boston.

Over the past 24 years, the Walk has raised more than $85 million to support pediatric and adult cancer research and care at Dana-Farber. Walkers choose from one of four route options designed for everyone from the marathon enthusiast to the youngest walker. There is also a virtual walker option for those who can't make it to the event.

"We gratefully accept the 2012 Sidney Farber Medical Research Award, and our partnership with Dana-Farber is another example of our commitment to the community, said Joann E. Flaminio, president of the Boston Athletic Association. "Philanthropic endeavors and specifically the battle against cancer are taken very seriously at the B.A.A., and we take great pride in the strides we've helped Dana-Farber make in furthering cancer research and improving patient care. Partnerships like the one we have with Dana-Farber are critical to the success of our mission of promoting a healthy lifestyle."
