Athletics: Canady, Yates Capture USA 100K Trail Titles

Canady sets new course record at Bandera, defending champion Howard, running on a sprained ankle, finishes fourth in women's race

BANDERA, Texas - Sage Canaday and Michele Yates demonstrated the versatility of their running talent with wins here in the USA 100K Trail National Championships, held in conjunction with the Bandera Trail Races 100K event on Sunday, Jan. 13.

Canaday (Rick Kent photo), 27, of Boulder, Colo., won his first ultra trail championship, following up on his 2012 national title at the USA Mountain Running Championships. The 100K course in the rugged Hill Country State Natural Area, southwest of Bandera, suited his mountain running expertise well.

From the start, Canaday took the lead and widened as the day wore on. While most of the field was hampered by the damp day, with mud-slick trails, Canady raced to a new course record, breaking the previous best of 8 hours, 16 minutes, 48 seconds set in by Dave Mackey in 2011.

Canady's 8:13:49 put him nearly 40 minutes ahead of runner-up Mackey, 43, of Novato, Calif. Mackey, a medical student, won the Masters for the second straight year and raised his total of USA Masters victories to seven.

In third place was Paul Terranova, 39, of Austin, Texas, who was looking for a slot in the prestigious Western States 100. The Northern California race offered entries to top Bandera finishers, and Terrnova snagged one with his sub-nine hour performance.

In the women's race, defending champion and course record holder Liza Howard, 40, of San Antonio, knew it would be a tough day as she arrived at the start with an ankle sprained earlier in the week.

Personal trainer Yates (nee Suszek), 30, of Estes Park, Colo., took the lead and widened it to win in 10:08:48. Yates (photo, left by Rick Kent) won her first national title at last year's 50-mile trail championships at the Nueces Trail Run, also in Texas, and plans to defend that crown this March. The former track and field athlete at UNLV also enjoys road racing.

In second was San Antonio's Melanie Fryar, 32, a self-employed single mother, who moved through the field and into second place before the halfway mark. She finished in 10:17:30.

Sabrina Little, a 26-year-old from Texas, best known for her stellar 24-hour performance at the North Coast 24-Hour in 2012, managed to catch and pass Howard. Despite her injury, Howard won the Masters division, and finished fourth overall in 11:07:56.
