Athletics: Hoka One One Runners Finish Strong at Bandera Trail Run in Texas

Richmond, CA: January 22, 2013 - HOKA ONE ONE ultra-runners Dave Mackey, Karl Meltzer, and Jen Benna opened the 2013 race season with resounding success at the Bandera Trail Run in South Texas on Saturday, January 12th. Benna and Mackey both made podium finishes, placing first and second in their respective races, while Meltzer earned a fourth place title, all crossing the finish in their oversized performance running shoes from Hoka.

Benna, of Reno, Nevada, won the women’s 50K field with a time of 4:59:05 and placed seventh overall in the combined men’s and women’s field. “Mud, rain, and cactus made the win at the Bandera 50km something to cherish,” says Benna. “I let my head set the pace and my heart drive me when things got tough.”

The mud-packed trails were a welcome challenge for Mackey and Meltzer, who dominated the men’s USA Track and Field 100km. Mackey, who is the former course record holder for the Bandera Trail Run, finished second overall with a time of 8:53:27.

"I had a lot of fun bounding through the mud during the first 50km lap and settled into a nice pace on the dry, hard-packed terrain from there. My HOKA Bondi B's handled the mixed environment of the course well,” says Mackey.

Meltzer of Sandy, Utah, finished fourth, with an overall time of 9:01:27. “It was my second best off-the-couch run,” says Meltzer. “I ran further on Saturday than I had run since December 1st. Dave, Jen, and I thrived on the course’s technical and junky terrain. When others whine, we thrive.”

The event drew nearly 950 runners and included a 100km, 50km, and 25km race along with the USATF 100km National Trail Championship.
