Family-friendly adventure series to visit nine U.S. cities in 2013
San Diego, CA--- January 23, 2013 --- The muddy mania will return in 2013 as the REI Muddy Buddy Adventure Series unveils nine U.S destinations, with new events in Los Angeles and Seattle. The season kicks off on Saturday, April 20, 2013 in Richmond, Virginia.
REI Muddy Buddy events are adventure races that invite teams of two to choose between the traditional REI Muddy Buddy Bike & Run, in which participants switch off running and biking, and the REI Muddy Buddy Run, which keeps teams together as they navigate on foot. Courses are lined with challenging obstacles and creative costumes are encouraged.
Each event’s signature finale involves both teammates crawling through a 50-foot-long mud pit before crossing the finish line together. Participants receive a finishers medal, t-shirt and for those over 21, access to a post-race beer garden.
In 2013, the event series will benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF), the world’s largest source of support for prostate cancer research. Teams can sign up to participate with Athletes for a Cure, the fundraising and awareness program of PCF. Funds raised will support prostate cancer research in early detection and screening, as well as nutrition and exercise focused research as they relate to the disease. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the U.S. and is expected to take the lives of 30,000 men in 2013.
"As the benefiting charity of this event, we hope to raise not only funds for research, but also awareness for a disease that affects 1 in 6 American men and yet is often fought in silence," said Jonathan Simons, MD, President and CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation. "Through the REI Muddy Buddy series, we can reach an audience of active, health-conscious individuals and families, many of whom have a connection to the disease and are motivated to fight back."
"REI Muddy Buddy is a great athletic competition, but most importantly it’s a day that brings friends, families and people of all abilities together. As we prepare for another year of fun in the mud, we look forward to making a difference along the way, knowing that many of our participants and their families have been faced with this disease," said Bob Babbitt, founder of the Muddy Buddy series. "Athletes for a Cure is an inspiring team of athletes that we’re thrilled to support."
The REI Muddy Buddy Adventure Series benefiting the Prostate Cancer Foundation is a true family friendly event, as kids between the ages of 4 and 11 can also join in the fun as a part of the Mini Muddy Buddy, in which they complete a short obstacle course and slither through the same mud pit as the grown-ups.
