Athletics:New Marathon Event Runs into Banff National Park

Inaugural Banff Marathon to Take Place June 23, 2013

Banff National Park, Alberta – (March 26, 2013) – Iconic Banff National Park will be home to one of the world’s finest running experiences this summer as the inaugural Banff Marathon takes place June 23, 2013.

The new marathon, organized by LifeSport Coaching, will offer runners a unique opportunity to race through the spectacular scenery of Canada’s first national park as well as enjoy 16 interpretative experiences en route. The marathon organizers were diligent in their preparations for Parks Canada approval to ensure responsiveness to wildlife contingencies, traffic management and spectator controls.

“Participants will flow through a series of incredible natural, wildlife and historical stages,” said Paul Regensburg of LifeSport Coaching. “Each stage will represent a different chapter of the Bow Valley Parkway’s story, with icons representing the significance and importance of the natural surroundings.”

The 42-kilometre point-to-point course will start south of Lake Louise on the Bow Valley Parkway, continue along The Legacy Trail and Vermillion Lakes Road and finish to cheering spectators in downtown Banff. Participants can also opt to run the shorter half marathon along the same route, starting south of Johnston Canyon.

“Banff National Park has always welcomed visitors to enjoy low-impact, healthy outdoor pursuits,” said Julie Canning, President & CEO of Banff Lake Louise Tourism. “The Banff Marathon continues the park’s legacy of offering visitors active adventures amidst awe-inspiring wilderness and we look forward to welcoming the participants in June.”

Capacity for the Banff Marathon has been limited to 1,500 runners and demand for the event is expected to be very high. For those interested in participating, registration is now open with early bird rates applicable until March 31, 2013. It is expected that participants will travel with their families and extend their stay beyond the single-day event to take in local attractions and activities.
