Athletics: 2013 London Marathon Will Air LIVE on Universal Sports Network This Sunday, April 21, at 4 AM ET

Los Angeles (April 18, 2013) - Universal Sports Network, the year-round destination for Olympic and endurance sports programming, will provide LIVE television and online coverage of the 2013 Virgin London Marathon on Sunday, April 21 from 4 to 7:30 AM ET. The network’s exclusive U.S. coverage will feature 37,500 runners competing alongside an elite field that includes defending champion Wilson Kipsang, world record holder Patrick Makau, current World Marathon Majors champion Geoffrey Mutai and winners from numerous major city marathons such as Berlin, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Paris, Rotterdam and Frankfurt.

Sunday’s event in London will feature tributes to those killed and injured at the Boston Marathon this past Monday. Race organizers have announced there will be a 30-second moment of silence prior to the start of the elite men's race and mass start to mark the tragic events in Boston, and are encouraging runners to wear a black ribbon in tribute.

The 2013 London Marathon features one of the greatest elite men's field assembled in marathon history, including nine who've run the distance under 02:06, five of the 10 fastest men of all-time, and three of the five fastest to have completed the London course. Among them are Kenyans Makau, Kipsang, who is also the Olympic bronze medalist, and Mutai, who is the fourth fastest male ever. The race will also feature 2012 Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda, the 2012 Chicago champion Tsegaye Kebede of Ethipoia and course record holder Emmanuel Mutai of Kenya.

On the women’s side, current Olympic gold medalist Tiki Gelana looks to become the first Ethiopian to win the women's London Marathon title since Derartu Tulu in 2001. She faces stiff competition from an elite women’s field that includes four athletes who have run under 02:20, 10 who have gone under 2:25, and five of the 20 fastest female runners of all time. World champion Edna Kiplagat and Olympic silver medalist Priscah Jeptoo of Kenya look to reach the top of the podium after finishing second and third last year.

While none of the elite field who competed in Monday’s Boston Marathon are due to take part in London, two-thirds of the elite wheelchair field are scheduled to compete including 2013 Boston champions Hiroyuki Yamamoto of Japan and Tatyana McFadden of the U.S.

Universal Sports Network is the television home to four of the World Marathon Majors (WMM) including the Boston, London, Berlin and Tokyo races, and covers global endurance events including the Los Angeles, Rotterdam and Stockholm marathons and the ITU World Triathlon Series.
