Athletics: Lakatos with Gold; Richter with Silver on day 2 of 2013 IPC World Championship

On day 2 of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championship, Dorval Que.'s Brent Lakatos won a gold medal in the men's T53 400-metres with a new Canadian and IPC World Championship record of 49.02 seconds. The Canadian anthem will play tomorrow at 4:44am eastern time as Brent is a-top the podium in Lyon, France.

Becky Richter of Saskatoon, Sask., won a silver medal in the women's F51, 52 and 53 seated discus throw. Becky registered a throw of 6.09 metres establishing a new F51 Canadian record as well. In mixed classification field events, each participant is given points to determine their placing; Becky registered 883 points. "Winning the silver is amazing. I wasn't expecting it at all", says a thrilled Becky. "I just went out there and wanted to do my best and I did it." In the same final Toronto, Ont.'s Martha Sandoval Gustafson was 8th registering 9.56 metres (415 points); Martha is in the T52 class.

In the women's wheelchair 200-metres Ilana Dupont of Saskatoon, Sask., finished fourth in theT53 final clocking 32.02 seconds. In the T54 classification final Keira-Lyn Frie, also of Saskatoon, finished fifth in 31.69 seconds.

Curtis Thom of Ottawa, Ont., and Colin Mathieson of Winnipeg, Man., finished 6th and 8th respectively in the men's wheelchair T54 400-metres final. Curtis crossed the line in 48.90 and Colin in 50.07 seconds. Earlier in the day the duo qualified for the finals and Curtis noted: "It feels good to be through to the final. Now that I have the first one under my belt, the nerves are gone and I'm good to go". Clarenceville, Que.'s Alexandre Dupont finished fourth in the semi final and did not advance to the final with 49.49 seconds.

Calgary, Alta.'s Alister McQueen ran a new Canadian record in the men's ambulatory T44 200-metres final. Alister clocked 23.67 for the 6th place finish.

In the women's T35 ambulatory 100-metres Virginia McLachlan of Windsor, Ont., finished second in her semi final heat in 16.13 seconds. She qualifies for the final tomorrow while setting a new Canadian and Area record. "I was even more nervous than I was in London (at 2012 Paralympic Games) but when the gun went off I felt great."

  • Kevin Strybosch of London, Ont., placed 10th in the men's F37 and F38 ambulatory discus throw. Kevin himself is an F37 classification thrower and registered 44.32 metres (888 points).
  • Langley, B.C.'s Braedon Dolfo finished 13th in the men's T13 visually impaired long jump measuring 5.75 metres.
  • Kyle Whitehouse of St. Catharines, Ont., finished fourth in his semi final heat of the T38 ambulatory 100-metres. Kyle clocked 11.75 seconds to secure his spot in tomorrow's final.
  • Sherbrooke, Que.'s Diane Roy was 10th in the T54 wheelchair classification 5000-metres with a time of 12:13.17
  • Austin Smeenk of Oakville, Ont., finished the T34 wheelchair 200-metres in a personal best time of 30.18 seconds to qualify into the finals tomorrow. Nathan Dewitt of New Westminster B.C. does not advance with 31.42 seconds.
  • Jean-Philippe Maranda of Sherbrooke, Que., registered a personal best in the T53 400-metres semi final clocking 52.82 but did not advance to the final
