Athletics: New Road Race Comes to Houston

Houston's 12K of Christmas, on Saturday, December 21, 2013, will be a timed event with runners starting and finishing at Discovery Green in Downtown Houston

HOUSTON - RA Sports Management has added a new 12K (7.45 miles) road race in Houston for Christmas with Yellowstone Academy named as the beneficiary. Houston's 12K of Christmas, on Saturday, December 21, 2013, will be a timed event with runners starting and finishing at Discovery Green in Downtown Houston. The 12K course, scheduled to begin at 7:45 am, will take runners through the streets of Downtown Houston and through the popular Midtown area.

Each race finisher will receive a finisher's shirt and finisher medal specially made to hang on a Christmas tree. Houston's 12K of Christmas will hold pre and post race events in Discovery Green for the entire family, including serving hot cocoa, Christmas Carolers at every water station, and an appearance by Santa Claus and his crew.

"The 12K distance is almost unheard of in road races. However; when we sat down to plan this event, we thought a 12K was the perfect distance at this time of year for those tapering in their marathon or half marathon training," said President of RA Sports Management, Graham Schooley. "We are excited to add this race to Houston's running repertoire."

Houston's 12K of Christmas named Yellowstone Academy to serve as beneficiary of the new Houston race. 10% of all race registration fees will be donated to Yellowstone Academy on behalf of Houston's 12K of Christmas and race registrants have an option to make a 100% tax-deductible donation directly to Yellowstone Academy at the time of registration and at the event itself.

Yellowstone Academy was established in July 2001 for the purpose of creating a high quality faith-based private school serving students living in poverty. The school just celebrated it's 10th year serving children in Houston's inner city 3rd ward neighborhood as well as graduating it's first 8th grade class.

"Joining forces with Yellowstone Academy is the icing on the cake to starting this new 12K." stated Schooley. "We are honored to be able to shine a light on a wonderful organization. This allows us to help break the cycle of poverty in Houston, while getting students involved in what should be a cheerful time of the year for every child."

Registration for Houston's 12K of Christmas on December 21, 2013 at Discovery Green in downtown Houston is now open. For more information about Houston's 12K of Christmas, go to Houston12K.com.
