Comments: Running is a 30 + year hobby. It is an ingrained part of my life style. I admire those who are able to dedicate themselves so fervently they attain world class competitiveness. You certainly are attractive and appear to enjoy being a triathelete. May you remain blessed in good health and you are able to enjoy participating for many years to come. Running has preserved my youth and makes it possible for me to look to the next day and the opportunity for my body to enjoy the rhythmic movement and breathing of a good long run. Wish you good fortune in all your endeavors.

Comments: Yo Sharon, I realized the Cancun WC was on this weekend, so I thought I would check your site to see how you are doing. Little did I realize that your nagging hamstring that has been bugging you for years took you out of a whole pile of races since we last talked. Oh well, at least its not a Commonwealth Games, Pan Am or Olymic year. I read the story of how you pushed your hamstring a bit too hard running with the group in Victoria. Well if anyone I know who is able to stick to the plan and not get carried away by others in training it would be you. I remember going to the track with you at 95 World Military Games and watching everyone hammer themselves into the ground 3 days before the race...well, everyone but you. They all had crappy races and you had a good one. So rest up and go back to your philosophy on training and racing. Hope to see you and Dave out for some ski racing and traininig in the Gatineaus this winter. Take care Dev PS. Brandon ran his first road race this summer. Did 1.2 K in around 6 min or so...better than my Ironman shuffle pace !

Comments: I just wanted to let you know how happy I was to have the opportunity to talk to you in person at the 4th annual RMC Legacy Dinner! Your an inspiration to me as I'm working extremely hard to reach the level of competition your competing at. Sometimes I have my doubts on whether or not it is realistic to pursue such a goal while being in the military but your proof that it can be done. Thanks, and good luck on Nov. 4!

Comments: Hello, cool site, I'm a runner from N.S. and I'm thinking some day I want to do a triathlon. I have friends that do them and I have participated in a team event as the runner. Paul Crosby is now in Ontario going to school and I think competing in triathlons. He won them all in Pictou County in his age group. His a friend that I trained for races with. We have competed against each other in Cross country and track events for school. Best of luck in your sport and hopefully some day I can complete my first triathlon.

Comments: Hi Sharon, My name is Nicole Patterson, and I am definately one of your biggest fans. I am 13 years old, and am just entering the world of triathalons. I have been participating in Kids of Steel since I was 7 years of age, but have just started to compete. This year I am racing in the Subaru series, and have completed 3 subaru sprints this season. I just want you to know that after I saw you and Carol Montgomery compete in the Toronto World Cup last year, you motivated me for life. I have a long way to go, but without your help, I might not have even gone this far. I am coming to watch you this Sat at the second Toronto World Cup, and I wish you the best of luck. The main thing about triathalons, is that you have to love the sport. Like you, I love triathalons with a passion. It would mean the world to me if you e-mailed me back. I would print out the e-mail, and keep it with me forever. Thank-you for your support, (even though you didn't know). Sincerely, Nicole Patterson

Finally I decided to get into triathlons myself, inspired by you of course, and now I can't understand why I didn't start a long time ago!! It's a blast, lots of hard work - great 'tri' people here in Ottawa. I have a great respect for you and what it takes to compete, especially at a high level. Comments: Sharon, I haven't seen you since you led the 2 Svc Bn Biathalon Tm to train and compete in valcarties in 1994. I'm certain that you are disappointed, but your strength of character and determination shone through. I, as I am certain all Canadains are, am very proud of you. It was emotional to watch you during the triathalon and good to see you enjoying yourself at the closing ceremonies. The CBC commentators made some good comments about, 'Sharon Donnelly the Kingston Kid who as an RMC graduate got back on her bike and finished the race'. (I might have got the quote wrong, but the manner in which they described your determination and the matter of fact way in which they spoke of your strength, without any doubt or amazment, speaks highly of the impression you leave on people.) Please pass on my congratulations to the rest of the Canadian Olympians. Great flag at the closing ceremonies! Must have been a great party! Will you be out in Edmonton next summer for the world track and field competiton? Hope to see you then. Congratulations. Dan MacIsaac

Comments: Hi Sharon, Long time since you've heard from me eh?! I've really been looking forward to your participation in the Olympics. On the friday (Calgary time) of the triathlon my girlfriend Maureen, her son Alex, and I were on a drive to the mountains, all the while thinking of you and hoping you were doing well. When we got to our hotel room we were glued to the TV to get an update. We were heartbroken to hear of the crash and yet still immensely impressed with you. Sat morning we caught the one on one interview you had with CBC and all three of us were again totally glued to the TV. We were all proud of you and so impressed with your perseverance and composure to say the least. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that you moved and inspired us. I don't imagine you'll be back for x-cadet weekend, but hope to see you again soon in any case. Enjoy the rest of your time in Sydney!! Phil P.S. If you see Jill Hyland, please say hi to her for me.

You could've blamed any number of factors for not getting a medal but you didn't!We are not a RAW RAW country like some others...and I'm glad for that. You finished and held you head high...You deserve to.Those teachers could show their students that here are the qualities of not only a superior person but here are the componets of a CANADIAN person ..Thanks for repesenting our country on the largest scale ..and once again CONGRADULATIONS....as i sit here to write this , your actions make me proud of my country!!!!!!ROB VISCONTAS RR#6 AYLMER, ONTARIO CANADA N5H2R5

Comments: Hi Sharon, Monique Giroux here, Ottawa friend. Hope you are doing well and that you are maintaining perspective and focus for the final push. I'm sorry I missed your party in Kingston (the first time in a long time I didn't go down), but I was doing some post Ironman R&R. Actually, I was trying to get a relay team together (me being the swimmer), but when I found out you were doing the same, I escaped the potential embarrassment... The main purpose of my email is just to wish you success in Sydney. You have done so much in the last few years in preparation for this event and I sincerely hope that you achieve personal excellence. Although on a completely different level, I have done the same preparation (in my world) for my first Ironman this summer and when I crossed the finnish line, no, I was not first, not even close, but the thrill of personal victory was amazing. You are an incredible role model for so many people, and in particular, young women who are thinking of taking up the sport. You have incredible grace on the sports field and regardless of your placing in Sydney, the world will respect you for your class. Sharon, I am supporting you with great anticipation and wish that your Olympic experience be a most memorable one for you. Best wishes, Monique

You CAN DO IT! Don't let the hype of the situation change a focus that has clearly worked well for you in the past. Remember why you got into tri's in the first place. Remember your passion for the process. Your desire and ability to dig deep - to push the envelop. If you do this, I have no doubt that the outcome will speak for itself! Go get'em Sharon! You have already made us all proud!!! This is just icing on the cake! Words are not enough to convey my thoughts of best wishes. All who know you and many who will come to know you through this experience from Canada, will be behind you. I can't fully imagine what it will be like to fulfill this dream.... But I do know that every kid growing up has had it. Wow, Good luck Debb

The other day I came across the book: Who's Who in Canadian Sports. Thought I look up your name (I had seen you on the late Ottawa news a couple of years ago) and found out that you qualified for the Olympic Team in Sidney. Your dream came true! I am so happy for you and will certainly root for you in front of my TV screen. Good luck! Barbara

I saw you on the cover of the ex-Cadet magazine and then my youngest son (age one) was flipping through the TV channels yesterday and suddenly, there you were! It was very neat seeing someone I recognized front and centre on the TV. Up to this point I've only known hockey players and they are MUCH harder to recognize on the small screen! Anyhow, congratulations on your placing in Toronto and good luck at the Olympics!! KAREN

Comments: I was on my way to Ontario Place with my husband and daughter totally oblivious to the fact a World Cup tri was on in my home town. Due to a wrong turn we were in the middle of a traffic jam with a helicopter flying over head. I looked out my window and I saw you flying by. I told John I had to get out of the car to see this race. I spent the next 1/2 hour cheering the women on the run. It was so inspiring for me to see such excellence in athletics. I was so happy my daughter could see such strong women participating in an amazing sport. I am doing Ironman USA and she thinks Mommy is always 'exercising'. It is so much more than that. It will be awhile before she understands (she's 2) but seeing you and the others is a great start. No matter what happens at the Olympics you make me very proud to be a Canadian, a triathlete, and a woman. In no particular order. Cheers!

Comments: Cool site. I'm a 2nd year triathlete training for my 1st Ironman, California. Nov-Jan were all base, Feb has been speed with 2 weeks recovery. I plan Apr and May as my aerobic build with a 3 week taper. Have had a lingering cold, off and on since Dec. Until the weather breaks and it warms up (which for me kills of cold viruses) is it ok to do low-range aerobic training? I know this is an overtraining condition I have but you know it's difficult to stop training. As long as I'm not experiencing body aches, I figure it's ok. Is it? Thanks Conrad Schumacher

Comments: I was surfing the web for triathlon and clicked into the runnersweb because I am always looking for info to improve myself. I did sprint tri's for a few years and am now trying to get back into training after taking a year off after some surgery. I am trying for longer tri's like the olympic distance. I got into your homepage because I am interested to see who is going to be in the 1st tri in the Olympics! Good luck! Do you know of any websites where I can get basic information on training? I have never had formal training in swimming so I am kinda clueless to the terminology. I also have problems with calculating the distances. I was out of school before they started teaching the metric system. I am going to be 40 this year and my goal is to do a marathon and an olympic length tri this year!

I've always been interested in fitness but never took it anywhere serious. This past year I've gotten pretty fit through aerobics and am starting to think of weight training. I thought it would be cool to train for an entry level triathlon. I know if i decide to do it I will have to get focused and devote the time to it. I can imagine how much work it takes. We have been riding together and she is right there. It will be great to have her back. I like to chase her in a race, even if I don't catch up to her. She is a big motivation. Have a great summer! Comments: HI Sharon Goodluck this year. I enjoy seeing you at the races. Are you going to be doing the Guelph Lake TRI in Jun? I want to see you and Louise Powell go head to head. Should be a good race to watch. I am a clysdale category racer, but am dedicated enough to be doing IronmanUSA Lake Placid this year. I did my first TRI in 1986 and have done them since then, with an increase in intensity level to doing all of the Trisport events in each of the past 3 years. How do the Trisport events compare to other events around the world in difficulty and organisation? I was at Hawaii last year to support my brother in law, who raced, so I can compare to that race. But that has got to be the pinacle for organisation and difficulty. I very much enjoy the trisport events and was looking for some sort of worldwide comparison. Any comments? Michael

Comments: Hey Sharon! I remember channel surfing back in 1997 and being disappointed when TSN was broadcasting some boring race from Newfoundland instead of a ball game...then like an apparition there you were...in the lead and perspiring heavily. It was the first triathalon I've ever watched (and admittingly the only one) - but I was rivetted to the TV and cheering you on! Anyway I was speaking to Sully last night and got the scoop on this web page. Congratulations to both you and Dave - I'm very happy for you. I've been keeping clandestine tabs on you for some time now, so you two tieing the knot wasn't a big surprise for me. Me...well I took FRP in 96, got a job doing some engineering for communications company and went back to school to upgrade. I quick the job last summer and now I'm in med school at the University of Calgary. I'm having a fantastic time (well, not all the time but better than 50% so I'm happy). I'm still single and having fun... the health care system is a 'target rich environment' for a bachelor you know! Any way my dear, drop me a line sometime. Good luck this season! I'm a money manager with my own mutual fund company and investment counselling firm Canso Fund Management Ltd and Canso Investment Counsel Ltd. (named after the PBY5a Canso Aircraft). I'd be interested in talking with you about some form of sponsorship. I just sponsored the RMC women's Rugby team and helped to organize a Business Lunch on Derivatives in Toronto to help fund them. I went to my 20th and was pretty disgusted when they said they were unfunded for Rep when the College cut their budget after beating all the women's University teams. I even had Dr. Binhammer attend! We got 100+ and raised over $10,000. I just started the firm and I'm not doing a lot of advertising but I wouldn't mind helping you out now and once we ramp up (and you win your Gold Medal!)we could build up a campaign etc. I'm also the driving force behind The Financial Pipeline at www.finpipe.com which is a financial and investment education site that is very well regarded internationally. Let me know if you're interested. Call me at work at (905)707-5031.

Comments: Greetings from Halifax Sharon and Dave! So Sharon.....that's what you've been doing since graduating. Much impressed!! I must say that early in May of this year, I almost fell off my chair as I read in the Globe about how they listed Ms. Donnelly in the top 10 Canadian athletes to watch over the coming summer in terms of national and international competition. You've done very well indeed, and I'll echo Mike Keller - YOU GO GIRL! Just a few days ago, I thought I would check to see if you were on the Net, and after doing an Altavista search, you came up in the number one position (much like Sydney 2000 I suppose). Scooting through your website, I discover yet another surprise - Dave Rudnicki! So Dave's the lucky man, (or is Sharon the lucky girl?) I am happy for you both, and wish you the very best in your married life. Just to let you know about this end, I took the FRP IN Jul, 1995, and left the Navy as a qualified MARS officer. The day after I left the service, I started a new company dealing with the international placement of skilled Canadian tradepeople in Japan, Spain, and Germany. It's fun, and pays the bills. I'm getting back into running, biking, and have some vague idea of doing another triathlon, perhaps next year. (It takes a while to get the old bod back up to steam. Ahhhhh... to be 22 again...) Any hoo, you two take care of each other, and I wish the best for the both of you. If you're in Halifax sometime, give me a call. I'm in the book. We'll go to dinner at my partner's wife's restaurant and do some catching up. Bye for now, Doug Jost

Great page Sharon! Best of luck this season! I'm on the triathlon and cycling teams here at the U.S. Military Academy. We're traveling to Florida to do Gulf Coast next week. I have a quick question for you. Do you think it's really worth the time to wear socks on the run for a 1/2 Ironman? This is my first race over Olympic distance, so I was just curious. Thanks. Good luck once again!

Hi Craig Firstly, I must thank you for being my 100th guest to sign the guestbook! Pretty cool eh? What year are you at West Point? I have been there and my fiance played Rugby against West Point numerous times (We were both Class of 1990 at The Royal Military College of Canada) With respect to your question, in an Olympic Distance race (10km run) I would not bother with socks (make sure they are not brand new shoes!) But in the case of a 1/2 Ironman (Gulf Coast), especially when it is your first, I would recommend that you put them on (not after the swim, but after the bike - your feet will be drier (and you will have gotten rid of most of the sand - my pet peeve!) and thus easier to get your socks on. Use ankle socks. When I race barefoot in my shoes, before the race, I dump a lot of baby powder in them (to soak up extra water and sweat) and put vaseline in all the areas that may be blister prone (such as in the toe box area and the heel). Do you use elastic laces? They are great so that you do not have to tighten them - you adjust them prior to the race for comfort and ease of entry and then leave them. Then you only have to jam your foot in and your off (also there is no chance of numb feet from tying them too tight in your hurry to start the run). I go to the fabric store and buy a cheap role of thin elastic (much cheaper and lots more than the shoe elastic that you buy at a running store). Good luck in the race, and have fun - I will be looking at the results!
