Friday night race offers one of the largest prize purses for a road mile in the country; event part of the 2017 Bring Back the Mile Tour
(PITTSBURGH) - Pittsburgh’s fastest nighttime road race, the GNC Live Well Liberty Mile returns on Friday, July 28. The 2017 race will feature six waves of runners starting with the recreational level and ending with professional athletes. America’s fastest milers will compete for a $30,000 prize purse, one of the largest prize purses in the country.
More than 2,000 runners of all ages and abilities are expected to register for the 2017 event. The USATF-certified, u-shaped course takes participants through the Cultural District in downtown Pittsburgh.
The American Development Pro Mile will feature $30,000 in guaranteed prize money with each race champion awarded $5,000. The GNC Live Well Liberty Mile is also part of the Bring Back the Mile Grand Prix Tour 2017.
Last year, Heather Kampf and Ben Blankenship won their American Development Pro races in 4:33 and 4:02, respectively. Kampf became a four-time Liberty Mile champion (also 2012-13 & 2015-16), while 2016 U.S. Olympian Blankenship won his first GNC Live Well Liberty Mile title in his Pittsburgh debut.
"This 1-mile road race gives participants the unique opportunity to feel the excitement of running down Liberty Avenue at nighttime and then watching the country’s top milers race to the finish line," said Patrice Matamoros, P3R CEO. "No matter one’s age or ability, this is an ideal fitness distance for everybody."
